History

SB&A was originally founded by PR maven Susan Becher as “Susan Becher & Associates”. A California native, Susan began her career at the Los Angeles branch of Design Research, a modernist store that operated from 1953 to 1978, and where Ray Eames himself was a customer. She was involved in the launch of Frank Gehry’s original cardboard chair to the American market, and opened new stores for the brand in Boston and Philadelphia.

Eventually settling on the Upper West Side of New York City, Susan launched her eponymous firm in 1982. Sam Flax was her first client, followed by notable Italian brands including Marimekko, Flos, Cassina and Boffi. She helped launch Pottery Barn and Waterworks, and worked with brands including BDDW, MoMA Design Stores, Hermes and The Alpha Workshops - the first U.S. nonprofit to provide decorative arts education and jobs for people with disabilities.

A trailblazer in the design PR world, Susan was a renowned and beloved publicist for 35 years. She leaves a lasting impact on the design community.

“Early in my career, an august editor at Town & Country told me Susan was the only PR person she listened to because she only pitched what she believed in.”
